Chapter 25

Alex walked straight to the S-92’s small bathroom at the very back of the aircraft. She snagged the leather valise tucked under the sofa she and Gaius had used, and then closed the door for a few moments of privacy. It would take less than fifteen minutes for Heath to fly them southeast to Reading and the challenge Khalida had orchestrated there for Alex and young Bradley.

Unlike the luxurious shower housed in the bathroom of their private Airbus, the Sikorsky’s shower stall was just big enough for one. Alex stripped out of her ruined clothes and quickly turned on the warm water. She was under the stream and washing the blood from her hair when she felt Gaius enter the bathroom.

She said nothing, only continued to clean her skin and hair as swiftly as she could. Alex heard the water running in the sink, and she knew he was using it to wash what had transferred from her body when he held her from his hands and face.

“Do you need the shower too, Gaius?” she asked softly.

“No, but stop the water for just a moment and let me check your hair, Alex. See if you have gotten all the blood out of it,” he mentally asked of her, not wanting the others onboard to hear any more of their conversation.

Alex did as he asked, and wrapped her arms and aura around her body to stave off the cold as he opened the stall’s door. She bent towards him, letting Gaius gently touch her golden locks and inspect her effort.

“You have a little more on the right side of your head. Finish there, and you will be free of it all,” he said privately.

She nodded, and then stepped back. Gaius closed the door and watched her turn the water back on. Finally, he refocused on stripping out of his jacket and shirt. He found a fresh shirt in their valise, and he had it on when the water stopped flowing in the shower. Gaius lifted a towel and had it outstretched for Alex as she left the stall.

“Thank you,” she murmured, looking down as she began to dry her hair and skin hastily.

Gaius waited until she was free of the moisture before he said anything more. He handed Alex garments that she swiftly donned, and a comb that she could use to sweep the tangles from her hair. When she plugged in the small hairdryer that normally rested under the sink, Gaius took it from her hand and stood behind her. He turned it on and began to glide his left hand through her tresses as he dried each strand.

He watched Alex in the mirror as he completed the task, noticing that she was reluctant to meet his gaze. Gaius could also feel the disharmony trailing through her aura and even the slight shame that lingered there. It had flared thick and dense in her aura just after she beheaded the false Saleoss, and he knew Alex was not in the right frame of mind to go into the next situation that was now only minutes away.
